Ingredients

  • 1 cup quinoa thoroughly rinsed
  • 1 cup brown rice thoroughly rinsed
  • 1 cup lentils red or green, rinsed
  • 1 large sweet potato peeled and diced
  • 1 large carrot peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/2 cup peas fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup chopped spinach
  • 1/2 cup cooked chickpeas or substitute with kidney beans or black beans
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed rich in omega-3 fatty acids
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast for B vitamins and flavor
  • 1 teaspoon kelp powder source of iodine and minerals
  • 1/4 teaspoon taurine powder supports canine heart health
  • 4 cups water or low-sodium vegetable broth

Equipment

  • Large pot or pressure cooker
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stirring spoon
  • Strainer (for rinsing grains and legumes)

Method

Step 1:
  1. Rinse the quinoa, brown rice, and lentils thoroughly under cold water using a strainer. This removes excess starch and debris, ensuring cleaner cooking.
Step 2:
  1. In a large pot, combine the rinsed quinoa, brown rice, lentils, and 4 cups of water or low-sodium vegetable broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes.
Step 3:
  1. After 20 minutes, add the diced sweet potato, chopped carrot, broccoli florets, and peas to the pot. Stir well, cover, and continue simmering for another 20 minutes, or until the grains, lentils, and vegetables are tender.
Step 4:
  1. Once the grains and vegetables are cooked, stir in the chopped spinach and cooked chickpeas (or other beans). Let it simmer uncovered for 5 more minutes to allow the spinach to wilt and flavors to combine.
Step 5:
  1. Remove the pot from heat. Mix in the ground flaxseed, nutritional yeast, kelp powder, and taurine powder thoroughly. These add essential nutrients and improve the food’s nutritional profile.
Step 6:
  1. Allow the food to cool completely before serving to your dog. Portion according to your dog’s size and dietary needs. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze in individual portions.
