Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour or substitute oat flour for a gluten-free version
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter xylitol-free and unsweetened
  • ¼ cup low-sodium dog-safe broth (vegetable, chicken, or beef)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce or use mashed ripe banana as an alternative
  • ¼ cup water adjust for dough consistency if needed

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or nonstick spray
  • Bone-shaped cookie cutter (optional)
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it. In a large mixing bowl, combine the peanut butter, applesauce (or banana), broth, and water. Stir until smooth.
  2. Gradually add in the flour while mixing. Continue until a thick dough forms. If too dry, add a tiny splash of water. If too sticky, sprinkle in a bit more flour.
  3. Roll the dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thickness. Use a bone-shaped cutter to create treat shapes, or simply slice into squares.
  4. Place treats on the baking sheet. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden brown and slightly crisp. Let cool completely before giving them to your pup.
