How To Make Dog Food Gravy

To make dog food gravy, simmer low-sodium broth with dog-safe ingredients like lean meat, vegetables, and a thickener such as cornstarch or flour. Avoid toxic foods like onions or garlic. Cool before serving. This enhances kibble flavor, adds moisture, and can help picky or older dogs eat better.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground chicken or turkey
  • ¼ cup frozen green peas
  • ½ cup diced carrots
  • 3 cups chicken stock without onions, garlic, or salt
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder
  • ½ cup cold water

Equipment

  • Medium-sized saucepan or skillet
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Small bowl (for mixing cornstarch slurry)
  • Knife and cutting board (for dicing carrots)

Method

  1. Warm the coconut or olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the ground chicken or turkey and cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
  2. Stir in the diced carrots and frozen peas. Pour in the chicken stock, then bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
  3. While the broth and vegetables cook, mix the cornstarch or arrowroot powder with the cold water in a small bowl until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Slowly pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering mixture, stirring constantly. Continue cooking for 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Remove the gravy from heat and allow it to cool completely before serving to your dog. You can spoon it over your dog’s regular food for added moisture and flavor.
