Ingredients

  • 1 cup white fish fillets such as cod or tilapia, boneless and skinless
  • 1/2 cup sweet potato peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup green beans chopped
  • 1/4 cup carrots diced
  • 1/4 cup brown rice uncooked
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric optional, for anti-inflammatory benefits

Equipment

  • Medium pot with lid
  • Steamer basket or colander (optional)
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Mixing spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Step 1:
  1. Rinse the brown rice thoroughly under cold water. Place the rinsed rice in a medium-sized pot with 1 cup of water. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is fully absorbed.
Step 2:
  1. While the rice cooks, steam the diced sweet potato, green beans, and carrots for 10–15 minutes. Steam until the vegetables are tender but still firm, not mushy. You can use a steamer basket or boil the vegetables lightly in water and then drain them.
Step 3:
  1. Heat olive oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add the fish fillets and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily. Do not season the fish with salt or any spices that might be harmful to dogs.
Step 4:
  1. Once cooked, flake the fish into small, bite-sized pieces. In a bowl, mix together the flaked fish, steamed vegetables, cooked rice, and turmeric if you choose to add it.
Step 5:
  1. Let the meal cool to room temperature before serving it to your dog.
