Ingredients

  • cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup fresh grated carrots
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ to ½ cup water as needed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon optional

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Grater (for carrots)
  • Rolling Pin
  • Cookie cutter (bone-shaped or round)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Wire rack (for cooling)

Method

Step 1:
  1. Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. In a mixing bowl, stir together whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and a dash of cinnamon if you like.
Step 2:
  1. Add grated carrot, applesauce, vegetable oil, and one egg to the dry mix. Start stirring, and gradually pour in a bit of water at a time until the dough forms. It should be firm but not too sticky.
Step 3:
  1. Lightly flour your surface. Roll the dough out to about a quarter-inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and arrange them on the baking tray, leaving some space between each.
Step 4:
  1. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the treats are golden and set. Let them cool completely on a wire rack before storing or serving.
