Ingredients

  • 3 to 4 pounds of beef bones such as knuckle bones, marrow bones, or oxtail
  • 1 large carrot chopped roughly
  • 2 celery stalks chopped roughly
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar to help draw minerals from the bones
  • 1 bunch fresh thyme
  • 1 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • Filtered water enough to cover bones by 1 to 2 inches

Equipment

  • Large stockpot or slow cooker
  • Strainer or cheesecloth
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Measuring spoons

Method

Step 1:
  1. Place the beef bones into a large stockpot or slow cooker. Add the roughly chopped carrot and celery. Pour in the apple cider vinegar and enough filtered water to cover the bones by 1-2 inches. Let this mixture sit for 30 minutes to allow the vinegar to start breaking down the bones.
Step 2:
  1. Turn on the stove to low heat or set the slow cooker on low. Add the bunch of fresh thyme and cover. Let the broth simmer gently for 24 hours, occasionally skimming off any foam or impurities that rise to the surface.
Step 3:
  1. After simmering, add the fresh chopped parsley and continue to simmer for another 30 minutes. This adds extra nutrients and flavor.
Step 4:
  1. Turn off the heat and allow the broth to cool slightly. Strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean container to remove the bones and vegetables. Let the broth cool completely before serving it to your dog or storing it in the fridge or freezer.

Notes

Always consult your vet before introducing new foods to your dog’s diet, especially if your dog has allergies or health conditions. Avoid adding salt, onions, or garlic in any amount that might harm your dog.
Bone broth is an excellent supplement, but it’s not a replacement for a balanced dog diet. Use it as a topper or treat. Freeze broth in small portions so you can easily thaw what you need without waste.
