Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour or substitute with oat flour or spelt flour for sensitive dogs
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 1 large egg
  • cup vegetable oil such as canola or sunflower oil
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup finely grated carrot approx. 1 medium carrot
  • 2 tablespoons water as needed for dough consistency

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or rubber spatula
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Grater
  • Rolling pin (optional)
  • Cookie cutter (optional – bone or paw shapes are cute!)
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat

Method

Step 1:
  1. Set the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to prevent sticking.
Step 2:
  1. In a large bowl, stir together the whole wheat flour and rolled oats until evenly combined.
Step 3:
  1. Crack in the egg, and then add the vegetable oil, applesauce, and grated carrot. Stir the mixture until it begins to come together into dough. If it’s too crumbly, gradually add water—one tablespoon at a time—until the dough is soft and workable.
Step 4:
  1. Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough out to about ¼ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to make shapes, or roll into small balls and gently flatten them by hand.
Step 5:
  1. Arrange the shaped dough on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the treats are golden and feel firm. Let them cool completely before giving them to your dog.
